This is an original Sumter Model 12 low tension magneto for a hit and miss gas engine. It was used on Fairbanks Morse headless Z and I’m pretty sure on the plugoscillator setup on the earlier Z engines. It is in good condition for its age. It mounts with two holes 2 inches apart on center. The threads are a bit sketchy but do hold a bolt alright. Replacement bases can be had relatively inexpensively if you don’t like this one. The magnets have just been recharged. The magneto turns over fairly stiffly and I think it’s because someone rebabbitted the bearing in the back plate. I think with a little more fitting this could be a really nice magneto. This magneto puts out a HOT, fat, blue spark that will surely run your engine if it is set up properly. It even has the original leadout on it and it is in good condition. It also has the original name band on it. The threads on the drive end of the armature are in great condition. With just a little loving it would be ready to go to work on an engine or would also be a good spare on the shelf. These don’t turn up that often anymore and are usually in pretty bad shape.
