Here is a cylinder for a 2hp Vertical Fairbanks Morse T. As far as I can tell there are no cracks, breaks, or welds on the cylinder assembly. There is a line in the original paint that could possibly indicate a crack but I think its just the paint. With a magnifying glass I cannot see a crack in the cast iron. The actual cylinder wall is a little pitted about 1-1/8 down from where the piston might travel, it looks pretty good below that. The way I have it figured is that the bottom two rings of the piston wouldn’t make it into the pitted area so it should still have good compression.
