Sitting in the storage area at the lake house. Looks to be a real nice flyball governor that grandfather had sitting waiting for a project. 2 1/4 Gardner is listed on the side of it as you can see.

I have for sale a nice 2 Gardner steam governor. I do not know this governors past history but I do know that it appears it’s been taken care of fairly well considering it’s age. No breaks, welds, or repairs that I can find. I’m no Steam expert but I suspect this governor wouldn’t need much work at all to be ready to be put to work. However, please see all 24 photos for the absolute best description and use your best judgment prior to purchasing. Spins freely and the fly balls do spread open by hand. “Has very heavy spring tension”. I do not know if it is missing anything or not as I’m no steam expert like I already said! GARDNER 1 1/2 Steam Engine Flyball Governer. Please see all pictures for exact details and measurements. I’m not sure if a couple of the pieces of cast that go around the center cogs have been cut at one point or not. Everything turns and spins with ease. The flyballs spread out when the shaft is spun.

This is a very hard to find original 3/4 Gardner steam engine governor. It could also work for a gas engine. It is in excellent, used condition just as found from an old collector’s estate. Everything moves as it should and it has very little wear on the the gears or on the shaft. All of the internals are in the steam chest. It stands about 17 inches tall and mounts with 3/4 npt threads that are in great shape as can be seen. The manual speed change lever works as it should. The screw type speed changer on the other side (I think it’s called the ball ranger) has been broken but I would think this would be a fairly easy piece to find from a parts governor or easily made. These original governors are almost impossible to find in the wild or even at swap meets so if you need one for a project don’t miss your chance on this one. Please see pictures for the absolute best description, any issues I see I will do my best to get the best pictures submitted. The balls are 2 in diameter. The bottom mounting holes measure 2″x 2″ as well. Governor is incomplete and what is there appears to have a good amount of wear and shows years of abuse. Please see pictures for the absolute best description. The bottom mount holes measure 3.5 from center to center. The balls are just under 2.5 in diameter. The width of the pulley is 3/4. The diameter of the pulley is 10. Governor shows it’s age and has typical wear for being over 100 years old. The fly balls to “sprint out” and expand. Piece from the one lever is broken/missing. Here is an original governor for an Ohio side shaft engine. It is stuck but should be easy to free up with some heat and gentle tapping. Check out the pictures and see if you need it.
