Fairbanks Morse Engine, Hit and Miss Engine

Here is a 1911 4 HP Fairbanks Morse Hoisting Engine. This is the easiest starting engine that I have owned, usually starting on the first pull and always by the second. The drum clutch and brake work as designed and this engine runs nice and slow. It will usually hit once and then carry through between 8 and 10 misses. If you are looking for an engine that actually does something, this one attracts attention with the multiple gears and accompanying sounds. Like most mining engines, this one is not without its battle scars. The base has been welded long ago, and the first gear on the hoist was welded during the restoration I assume. All gears are in great condition with no visible wear. The back of the barrel has a light pass of what looks like JB Weld that may have been placed on a crack, but no signs of crack or leak are found. I received it in this condition and don’t know why it is there. The tag, head, and barrel all have the same serial number, so this appears to be an original unit and not an assembly of parts. Just add your battery and coil and enjoy the sound. It does not sell with the cart but includes the wooden base.
