This is a VERY hard to find original Berling Type D base mount magneto. It was used on 19teens and 1920′s Curtiss airplanes and possibly had other applications. It is in excellent shape with no cracks, breaks, or repairs that I can see or know of other than a small chip in the cap which I’ve pointed out and it needs one of the advance/retard brackets re riveted in one spot. It is considered a 2-spark magneto delivering 2 sparks simultaneously to a cylinder. It has an 8-leadout cap so it must be for a 4-cylinder engine. It has a brass body and is very heavy. Everything seems to work as it should. It turns over nicely with no bearing wear that I can feel. It has good magnetism and puts out a nice blue spark at all of the leadouts. Everything inside the points cover looks to be in great shape. It mounts on a 2 inch square bolt pattern and the mounting threads are in great shape. These original Berling magnetos, especially the brass ones are almost impossible to find in the wild or even in old collections so if you’ve been looking for one for an authentic restoration here’s a really nice one. It would also be a great spare on the shelf. Let the pictures be your guide. I can be reached at 262 573 1931 if you’d like to talk about it.
