This is an ignition system for model gas engines. It is known as either a Buzz Coil or a Shower of Sparks Ignition system. There are 6 terminals associated with this product. At the Bottom right are the + and – battery terminals this is where you connect your 12 volt battery. At the top left of the ignition box is the high voltage terminal, to its immediate left is the ground for the spark plug. On the right side of the box is the points connector and its ground terminal. The red TEST button simulates the points closing and is a direct connection between the “points” terminal and the ground terminal. The HV to Ground spark gap is there to protect the ignition coil in case it is operated without the spark plug connected. Without a load the high voltage build up within the ignition coil will most likely arc internally and destroy the coil. The wooden box is made out of 5/16 Oak. There is no need for a capacitor across the points as it is built into the ignition box. (5 mfd at 630 vdc).
