WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF THESE KITS IN CAST IRON instead of our usual Bronze. We do not intend to reproduce these in Cast Iron. Thinking about building a Steam Engine or Hit and Miss Engine Kit, but aren’t sure you want to build something that complex…… ?? Here’s a simple, easy to machine kit for. Model Engine Construction Kit Includes ALL castings and materials needed to build. A metal lathe and a milling machine (or lathe milling attachment) are needed to machine this COMPLETE kit. This project is our easiest-to-build construction kit. It is straight forward, and requires only one machining fixture (materials for that are included). There are no gears and all fasteners are standard 6-32 thread. It is a GOOD SIZE, with a cast iron base measuring nearly 7-inches square. We are here to support what we sell. Also note that the Kit includes a photo CD with over 400 color photographs encompassing nearly all machining steps! Cycle – Atmospheric Engine, Flame Licker, or Flame Gulper Engine works by quickly heating air with the flame from an alcohol burner as the air is drawn into the clyinder. The air is then quickly cooled once inside, creating a partial vacuum. Finally, atmospheric pressure pushes the piston forward in an effective, albeit weak, power stroke. Bore & Stroke – 1.0″ x 1.5″. Flywheel – 3.2 Diameter. Length, Width, Height – 7.0″ x 6.8″ x 4.6. Finished Weight – 7 pounds (3.3 kg) Approx. Cast Iron Castings – Engine Base, Cylinder, Flywheel, and a single casting for the following parts Cylinder Head, Crank Disk, Piston. ALL Required Materials – Steel, Brass & Aluminum Bar Stock, Stainless Sheet Metal (for Engine & Fixture). ALL Required Fasteners – Screws, Nuts, Washers & Rivets (for Engine & Fixture). ALL Required Sundries – Valve Spring, Bearings, Rubber Feet, Burner Wick. DRAWINGS – 11″ x 17″, comb-bound, professionally produced in CAD with detailed 3-views & 3D Isometric view of each part. Also includes general assembly sheets and materials sheets listing each part and fixture. Photo CD with 400+ Construction Photos. PROJECT HISTORY – Mr. McGuckin’s Flame Licker Engine first appeared in Popular Science Magazine in February 1950. Construction kits were offered by its designer, Mr. Floyd McGuckin up into the 1960s. Later it was offered by well-known designer and supplier, Paul Breisch, followed by Jay Peters (Breisch/Peters were known Hit and Miss Gas Engine Kit Suppliers) and then Jared Schoenly (of Crescent Steam). NOW, after about 10 years off of the market, Littlelocos Model Engineering is proud to reintroduce the Flame Licker for a new generation of Model Engineers! The model kit offered here, with careful work to close tolerances, should produce a running engine. See the following video of our prototype engine. Note that this listing is for the KIT, and NOT the completed engine. Note that there are several other videos of engines built from this project, just search McGuckin Flame Licker on YouTube.
