Early old hit and miss gas engine. This engine appears to be about a 2 1/2 hp and is very complete, there is no mag, the bottom side of the hopper is cracked (Jack Frost got to it), the head and valves are very rusty, the governor is made of pot metal and the bracket is badly deteriorated, the flywheels look to be true when it is spun over, the piston has been removed and is rusty. This engine does have some part numbers (as pictured), with the letters “BL”. Take a close look at the pictures. Any help identifying this engine would be greatly appreciated! This engine was found in a scrapyard where I work about 2 months ago, I had intended to restore this engine but I do not have the time and patience for it at this time. If you have any questions, please let me know. This engine is located about 30 minutes north of St. Paul, MN sitting in my parents barn. This engine is an early R&V, Root & Vandervoort. The flywheels measure 14 1/4″ diameter, the piston measures 4″ diameter. There are no cracks or breaks to be found throughout the engine, except for the bottom of the hopper. Not a novice built piece. I run it on coleman fuel. The engine mounting board is zinc covered and measures 18″ x 11″. The engine measures 14″ long and 6″ wide from outside of flywheel to outside of flywheel. The flywheels measure 7 1/2″ in diameter and 5/8″ thick on the rim. If you want a nice early model and not a run of the mill modern model then this is for you. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. This is an original 2hp simplicity hit and miss gas engine built by western malleable and grey iron manufacturing company in milwaukee, wisconsin before they became turner manufacturing company in port washington, wisconsin. It is a very early engine (serial 14xx) and has the battery ignitor ignition not the webster magneto like most of them. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs the i can see or know of and it is in decent condition for it’s age but is loosely assembled and will need finish restoration. Some of the steel parts like the jam nuts and other items have heavy pitting on them from sitting in a damp barn. The castings are all pretty decent but do have some pitting in places as well. The cylinder seems to be in good shape except for the bottom inch that can be seen in the photos. This engine has the original muffler but is missing the fuel mixer and gas tank. The bearings are pretty good in this engine. The teeth on the gears have some pitting but i think they will work the way they are. The engine does have a little original green paint on it and displays pretty nicely. Everything moves as it should except possibly the intake valve and it will need new springs. It has very unusual shaped flywheels which aren’t seen very often on simplicity’s. Overall this should be a pretty straightforward project. This is a rather scarce engine as simplicity’s don’t turn up very often in the wild or even at swap meets so if you’re looking for something different this is certainly it. The raised letters always catch people’s eyes at the shows! I can deliver this for free to lesueur, mn, baraboo, wi, portland, in, or coolspring, pa, later this year. It can also be picked up here.
