Here is a nice big engine that would make a good project for someone looking for a decent size engine to work on. This is a 9 HP Hercules EK that is in good original condition. It’s never been painted or messed with and would be a dandy winter project. Here’s the good about it: it’s 99% complete and I have the original Webster magneto that has already been REBUILT that goes with it. I missed pictures of it as I’m initially listing this engine, but will add them when I get them. I don’t see anything broken or repaired on the engine. When we got the engine it was in the back of a barn that was full of stuff. To get it out, we had to take it apart, so that is why it is still partially disassembled. Nice original engine with a lot of potential. Here’s what will need some work: the engine is stuck, but I don’t think it’s very bad since it has been sitting in a dry place for years. The inner part of the muffler is missing, but the main outer part of the original is there! You could probably make a plate to go in there if you wanted to. The cap on the carb is missing. It also needs new main bearings, as someone stole the Babbitt out of them, but the crankshaft looks nice. Other than that, I think it’s a nice solid old engine. You don’t see too many of these big 9 HP engines, so don’t miss out on this one if you’re wanting one. I cannot guarantee it will have spark but looks and works as if it should. The bottom dust cover is intact and with no cracks, there are a few small dings here and there. The center to center on the ignitor bolt holes is 1 3/4. The bracket has the number 303M1 part number. The mag is missing the name plate but it is a model M Webster. The ignitor shaft turns free and snaps back easily. All springs are intact and have good tension, they are both very clean. I cannot guarantee it will have spark but looks and works as if it should. I don’t see anything else missing including all screws. There are no cracks that I see and should be a good part to rebuild. This engine has new rod and crankshaft bearings. The valves have been regrouned and surfaced. The has new rings. The piston sleeve has been resurfaced, not with a glaze buster, we used a cylinder hone. The engine starts on the 2 nd or 3 rd , sometimes 4 the pull of the flywheel. The engine sits on an oak cart with old factory cart hardware. I have the original muffler. The engine has a newly rebuilt magneto. I also have a spare one the has a good spark.
