Note a small lathe & mill are required to machine this engine. The Type D is neatly styled vertical engine with a 1-piece cylinder & base casting & it that was designed to look & be built like something that could have been made years ago. It uses an over-hung flywheel crankshaft that sits inside the four tapering legs of the engine base. This engine uses spark ignition & runs off regular gasoline by using a simple vapor carburetor. It can also be easily set up for other gas or liquid fuels. For a gas engine, it goes together fairly easy & is a neat engine to run. 3 Grey-Iron Castings, (engine base, flywheel & head castings). Detailed Nameplate with Stamped Serial #. Full, computer drawn machining plans with machining notes. A computer CD full of pictures of finished engines, machining set-ups, jigs, etc. There is also an engine manual/owners manual on the CD that can be printed out. This contains notes about adjusting the engine & running it. Note: Screws & nuts & other small hardware for this engine does not amount to much & is not included. There is a parts list with the plans. You will need to have an ignition coil (preferably a buzz coil type or one made for a model engine) & battery to run the engine. Engine Dimensions: 3/4″ Bore, 4-3/4″ diameter flywheel. The finished engine will stand about 10-1/2 tall & will weigh about 9 lbs. A video of a finished engine running on youtube can be seen below; the finished engine is not for sale. The RMC “Type D” Non-Compression Engine – YouTube. Video will open in a new window. Compared to other gas engine kits, this kit is fairly simple since the engine doesnt have any gears, cams, push rods, valves, etc. To machine & line-up. Care should still be taken to machine the few parts this engine does have and a small lathe & mill & standard tools will be needed to machine the castings & make parts for this engine. The base & head were sand cast without a follow board using RMCs own handmade core-less patterns. Because the base casting on the Type D engine is so unique, it has a longer parting line than normal. The castings clean up easily with an air die grinder, carbide burr & files. The one pic shows a couple small spots on the base casting that cosmetically could be touched up if wanted. Note that the base casting has mounting bosses placed conveniently on it, making it ideal for free-lance engine builders to make an engine out of. New Washington, Ohio 44854. 1/4 Scale Running Model Reproduction of a 5 H. Galloway Antique Hit and Miss Engine. It’s a NICE one! This one has 8 inch flywheels and from what I know, it is ¼ scale. I have another Galloway that has 10 inch flywheels and that one should be a 1/3. Here are the details on this engine. These are the measurements of the engine only, as if it was not mounted on the cart. It has 8 flywheels. In the posted video I made a mistake and said the flywheels were 7 ½ inches. They are actually 8 inches. It’s 16 inches long from the rocker arm to the back of the fuel tank. The widest part is the end of the crankshaft that sticks out from the flywheels, that makes it 8 ¼ inches wide and it’s 9 ½ inches tall. Measurements of it on the included cart are 25 ½ inches long from the front of the front wheel to the back of the rear cart wheel. The cart is 16 wide to the outside of the cart axles and it stands 16 inches tall from the ground to the top of the water hopper. The cart wheels measure 5 ½ inches. It weighs about 41 pounds. This engine gets its spark from a low tension coil that is mounted in the wooden box on the rear of the cart. It has a scale make brake ignition system that will run on 6 or 12 volts. The wire for powering the ignition system is coiled up around the coil box. A battery is not included. There are more details on the running of this engine listed below. Also a link is is posted that will take you to the video of this engine running. I ran this engine before doing the detail work of cleaning and polishing. So the posted photos were just taken and this is the way you will be receiving it. Many hours of machine work, paint work, polishing, assembly, adjusting and testing goes into producing a high quality scale model like this. A lathe, milling machine, drill press, lots of tools and an experienced operator(s) were needed to finish the rough castings and to fabricate the additional parts required. Having to pay someone for all of the machine work and fabrication involved would cost quite a bit! Whats included in this sale: You get the ¼ scale Galloway as pictured mounted on the all metal scale cart that has metal wheels with spokes. The front axle is fixed to the frame and the rear axle steers the cart. There is a scale wooden moving handle that attaches to the rear steerable axle. It is shown in a couple of the photos. Here is a web link that will take you to the video of this engine running. In this video I said the flywheels are 7 ½ inches. I was not correct as they are 8 inches. Take note in the video about how slow I had this engine running and it did not skip a beat. Most videos of scale engines like this show them running at a much faster speed and they still miss every now and then. I think that running them fast does not them a scale appearance. I first tried starting this engine on some old (had already been opened a few years back) Coleman lantern fuel. It ran but not that smoothly. It then fired right up and ran as you see it in the video. On the fuel mixture, it ran best between ¼ and ½ turn out at the most. Anything over a half a turn and it ran rich. The battery I used is a old 12 volt jell cell type battery that showed about 10 volt when I tested it. The included low tension coil should work on 6 or 12 volts, though I did not have a 6 volt battery to try it. On setting the speed. The governor setting can not be changed while the engine is running as it is mounted on the inside of the left flywheel. My reference for what is left and right would be if you were behind the fuel tank looking towards the front of the engine. Inside of the left flywheel you will see a threaded rod with the adjuster nut on the one end and the governor spring on the other. When turning the nut in, on to the threaded shaft, that increases the spring tension and the engine will run faster. In the video I had the nut all the way out to the end of the threaded rod. On the engine rotation direction. When looking at the side where the left flywheel is mounted. (the push-rod and the ignition are all on the left side) The flywheel rotates clock-wise. I used 10-30 wt. Oil in the drip oilier. Turn the top out about a turn and a half so it forms a drip every once and a while. The crankshaft end caps have grease cups on them. Tighten the top part and it forces grease down in the bearing area. There is a clear synthetic grease in them right now. There is a oil cup on the big rod end. Get some oil up on the wrist pin of the piston. If a part moves against something, oil it! That included the valve stems and the small valve stem that is on the bottom of the fuel mixer. Yes it will get dirty and drip oil when running it, just like the full scale engines do. The photos for this ad were taken after it was run for the video. NOTE: The rocker arm for the exhaust valve is held in place with two pins. One in the center and one on the push-rod end. These two pins are both the same size and they are just pushed in place. If the engine was turned upside-down they could slide out. They have a cotter pin holding on a aluminum spacer on the outside then there is the wheel. The cart wheels are the same on the inside and outside so it does not matter what way they are put back on. I check my emails often and will respond in a timely manor. All sales are final as I will not accept a return on a item like this. NOTE: This is a running reproduction of a antique engine. It is a adult collectible item and is intended to be used by a experienced adult. Just like the original engine, it has no safety guards in place. Loose clothing, long hair or fingers could become caught in any moving part when this engine is running or even being turned over by hand. Use commonsense and keep your fingers especially small fingers! Away from all moving parts! I make no guarantees or clams as to how it will run for you or even if you would be able to get it started. Some mechanical knowledge and experience is needed to run any antique model engine like this. I have clear photos posted of this engine and I have a video posted showing it running. You should have some knowledge of a engine like this, like how to maintain it, keep it lubricated and adjust it if necessary as I provide no instructions other than what is in my videos and written in this ad. No guarantees of any kind are included with a custom hand made, one of a kind adult hobby item like this. This item was listed on Wednesday 3-16-17 and is not pre packaged in advance right now. So should I get a question on the engine where I need to see something or send a photo I can easily do that. Once it’s packed, I wont be able to do that. Should there be any questions, PLEASE ask! This is Naptha (a type of gas) powered scale model engine that comes with no instructions or guarantees what so ever!! Do not stick your finger or other body parts in a rotating mechanical assembly!! The new owner assumes all responsibilities and liabilities to himself/herself and others with this engine. This is an adult collectible item not to be operated or played with by children. I make no clams to it being safe as it is a antique scale model reproduction produced back in the day when no safety guards, air bags, safety warning labels, ect.. Were attached to dangerous products. I make no claims that it will even run as some might not have the mechanical ability to figure it out. By purchasing this item you are stating that you have read my whole ad, you understand it and that you agree with the terms and policy’s stated in this ad. I have detailed photos posted. A link is in this ad that shows this engine running. Thank you for looking!! Should you have any questions, please ask. Thank you for looking! ½ Scale Running Model Reproduction of a Domestic Side Shaft Antique Hit and Miss Engine. It’s a NICE one! Here are the details on this engine. The engine itself, minus the wooden base is 15 inches long from the tip of the make brake ignition shaft to the fuel fill at the back of the engine. It’s about 11 wide from the outside of the pulley to the end of the crankshaft on the other side. It stands about 16tall from the bottom of the wooden stand to the top of the drip oilier. On the paint job. The cast block was smoothed out so the paint gives a nice smooth appearance. I do not know the year this one was made, but I can tell you that it does have the original paint job on it. There are a few small areas where the paint chipped and was touched up. Mainly around the flywheel hubs and around the head bolts and the area where the make brake contact assembly bolts on to the block. On the color of the engine…. Some of the photos needed to be taken with the flash on in my camera to show detail. All the flash photos make the engine look more red in color than it really is. I think the posted video taken outside in natural light shows the most accurate color. It is a dark brownish type of red, not a bright red like some of the flash photos make it look. The wooden base measures 29 inches long x 7 inches wide and. The flywheels measure 9 inches in diameter. It weighs around 55 lbs. Many hours of machine work, paint work, polishing, assembly, adjusting and testing goes into producing a high quality scale model like this. A lathe, milling machine, drill press, lots of tools and an experienced operator were needed to finish the rough castings and to fabricate the additional parts required. Having to pay someone for all of the machine work and fabrication involved would cost quite a bit! Whats included in this sale: You get the engine as pictured on the wooden stand. What is NOT included: The original 6 volt jell cell battery that I could not get to charge or the white wire I show in the video connected to the battery I used. There is room in the ignition box next to the low tension coil for a small 6 or 12v battery. DO NOT use a Lithium type battery. Either a jell cell, dry cell, Nicad or Nimh should be used. Here is a web link that will take you to the video of this engine running. This is the main ingredient, and possibly the only one in Coleman lantern fuel. I did add a couple of drops of castor oil in with the fuel for upper cylinder lubrication. You can use any high quality two cycle oil. Just go sparingly and keep it around 50:1 at the most. It has, what is called a Make Brake ignition system. How this system works is that there are contact points inside of the combustion chamber. The points close roughly at the bottom of the compression stroke. While the points are closed, the included hand made scale, low tension coil charges with electricity from either a 6 or 12 volt battery. (A battery is not included in this sale) Once the points open at the top of the compression stroke, the voltage in the coil is quickly discharged causing a spark at the contact points and that is what fires the compressed fuel air mixture. The part that you put in a drill is 1/2 (0.500) in diameter so you will need a drill with a ½ inch chuck. After taking the video of this engine running, I installed a scale globe type gate valve for a fuel shut off. (that is shown installed in some of the above photos) Since the fuel tank is in the engine block this is a gravity fed fuel system. When filled with fuel and not running, some fuel would seep out around the fuel mixers adjustment needle. Since you do NOT want to use the mixture needle as a fuel shut off, I added one. On the mixture setting that worked best for me, it started right up with the mixture needle turned out slightly less than ½ a turn as I show in the video. It was a cool winter day when I ran it so the setting that works best for you might be different. One note on the contact points for the ignition. The shaft that rotates the one contact for the points is spring loaded. There is a spring on the shaft. Since this sticks out at the front of the engine. It is possible when you are carrying this engine to push that spring loaded shaft in. This will not hurt anything, but if that shaft also rotates slightly it will not spring back into its position and the points will not make contact and work correctly. When this happens simple push in on the spring loaded shaft and rotate them back into position. Should you need to remove the points for cleaning, this can be easily done by removing one spring, take off the positive wire that is bolted to the one contact point stud and take out the two brass bolts with a 3/8 socket. I needed to grind down the end of the socket a bit to make it a super thin wall socket on the end so it fit over the one brass bolt head. When apart, make sure the contact area of the points line up and lay flat against each other. Remember when putting the wire back on, be careful not to make it so tight that you turn that stud because if you do the points will no longer lay flat against each other. You will note that there is a small O ring around the inner nut. This is to prevent any external spark ark between the shaft spring and that nut because they are close to each other. That would cause a misfire or possibly keep the engine from starting. Reapply a super thin layer of silicone form a gasket when putting the point assembly back on the engine and DO NOT over-tighten the two brass bolts. Remember they are just brass. And DO NOT put any silicone on those bolts as that could prevent that assembly from being electrically grounded to the engine block. I used 10-30 wt. Oil in the drip oilier. Make sure it’s turned on and dripping every once and a while. Put oil on everything that rubs against something!! There are many small oil holes located on this engine. There are spring loaded brass covers that cover oil cups for the crank shaft on the block. There is a hole on the connecting rod end for oil and oil the piston wrist pin plus put some oil on the exposed bottom part of the piston when its at bottom dead center. If it moves, oil it! Yes it will get dirty running it, just like the full scale engines do. The photos for this ad were taken after it was run for the video. I spent a afternoon cleaning everything up. I check my emails often and will respond in a timely manor. All sales are final as I will not accept a return on a item like this. NOTE: This is a running reproduction of a antique engine. It is a adult collectable item and is intended to be used by a experienced adult. Just like the original engine, it has no safety guards in place. After it’s packed I will update this part of my ad and list the package details here. I don’t like to pack in advance in case someone wants to see a photo that I do not have posted or want to know something about the item I need to check on. But when I have a chance in the next week after listing, it will be packed. I know I will be unscrewing the drip oiled for packing because it sticks up above the top of the block. I will start with wrapping the engine in stretch plastic wrap for paint protection. A thin layer of bubble-wrap then cover everything tightly in HD cardboard. That will then be wrapped in heavy duty bubble wrap. More details will be posted here like the container size and weight once everything is packed up. This is a reproduction gas powered scale model engine that comes with no instructions or guarantees what so ever!! Do not stick your finger or other body parts in a rotating mechanical assembly!! 1/3 scale Economy Hit & Miss Engine Casting Kit. Last 3 from the estate of Joe Tochtrop No more to be produced. 11 Aluminum castings 4 cast iron castings- crankshaft, pullet and 2 flywheels as shown Complete Plans with parts / materials list These are the last remaining castings from the Estate of Joe Tochtrop Includes my personal modification for Viton head gasket and piston ring, including parts. Joe was a long time maker of casting kits for various scale model engines. Upon his death I was able to obtain his entire casting conglomeration for his lifelong assortment of various motors. Sorting thru them, I found enough individual castings to able to put together a few complete casting kits for some of his motors. Because some of his casting patterns were lost, this engine in Joe’s configuration will no longer be produced. If you’ve ever wanted to build one of his motors, don’t miss this last opportunity to get an original Joe Tochtrop casting set. I included 3 pictures of this completed casting set from the dozens I have made over the years. As you can see, the finished version of Joes plans are only limited by your imagination. One of my upgrades made over the years was the use of a Viton Quad O-ring for a head gasket and piston ring. I also developed a tapered crank and flywheel plan to ensure straight running flywheels. This kit includes the plan changes for both upgrades, as well as the 2 Viton Quad O-rings you will need. Completed motor is approximately 12 inches long, 7 inches tall with 6 1/2 inch flywheels. Bore is 1 1/8th inch. My personal engines from this kit generally run between 350 and 500 rpm’s. Using the variable speed lever and flyball governor. This incredible Hit and Miss Engine is exactly the one you have been looking for! The workmanship on this engine is beautiful. So solid, simple and elegant. It appears that everything is there but I have not tried to start her, I will leave that to a person who knows these engines better then I do. The sled base measures 22.75″ long, just shy of 5.75″ wide. The engine width at the widest point is about 8″ with a length of about 15″ or so. From what I can tell the piston is about 1.25 in diameter. The fly wheels are 6 in diameter. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. The item “1/3 Scale HIT AND MISS Model Engine. This model has just been completed. It is a 1/3 scale model of a vintage Associated Hired Man hit and miss engine originally built around 1915. The flywheels are 6″ in diameter the piston is 1 1/4″ in diameter and has a 1 5/8 stroke. This is a very easy starting engine. The preferred fuel is Coleman camp fuel for its low odor and clean burning. The engine will also run on regular gasoline. The solid cherry wood base contains the solid state ignition system made by S/S Engineering. It is powered by 4 AAA batteries. An ignition switch is provided on the top. The sparkplug is a 1/4-32 NGK. They are readily available from NGK and other manufacturers. The main fuel tank is stainless steel. The crankshaft is made from high carbon steel for low wear and is lubricated via grease cups as is the big end of the connecting rod. The valves are stainless steel for a lifetime of running. The piston is lubricated with a drip oiler and has a check valve to stop oil blow back. Castiron rings provide excellent sealing and compression. The main bearings, connecting rod, camshaft bearing, and cam follower bearing are all made from bearing bronze for long life. The main frame, cylinder, head, piston and flywheels are all cast iron, no aluminum in this engine!! The fuel mixture is adjusted with a stainless steel needle valve. The speed is adjustable via spring tension on the flyball type govenor. This engine can be set for a very slow idle speed. The base is 13″ x 8″ and the engine and base stand 12 tall. This is a very detailed scale model. I have been building model engines for over 20 years and this engine shows that level of experience. Just add fuel and this engine is ready to run. I will include starting and maintainence instructions. This engine almost always runs on the first or second flip of a flywheel. The model will be double boxed and insured. I also have UPS do the packaging. I have had very good results with them. The price of material continues to rise. This is the lowest price I can sell one of these engines and continue to produce them. The item “1/3 SCALE HIRED MAN HIT AND MISS MODEL GAS ENGINE” is in sale since Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
