Red Wing Motor Company Red Wing Thorobred hit & miss 14 hp boat inboard. Nice old motor out of my deceased friends restoration shop. I know little about it. Red Wing Motor Company and the Red Wing Thorobreds. Two and four-cycle gas or kerosene powered, water-cooled inboard motors called “Red Wing Thorobreds” began to achieve world-wide recognition. Orders came from a long list of distributors in locations such as Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, New Orleans, Seattle, Lake Minnetonka (Minnesota), Norway, New Foundland, Canada, Siam, Nassau, and clients all along the Mississippi River. The 2-cycle were phased out in the late 1920′s and the 4-cycle were manufactured from 1 cylinder, 4-5 HP up to 6 cylinder, 200 HP. Both gas and diesel versions were manufactured. Many motors were used in commercial fishing. Coast Guard, and the Tennessee Valley Authority directly from the factory in Red Wing. One famous American, author Zane Gray, owned several different boats in various parts of the world powered by Red Wing engines. His 46 foot boat, the Frangitani, made a trip from Auckland, New Zealand to Papeete, Tahiti, a distance of 2,253 miles under its own power and carrying its own fuel. This is still regarded as one of the outstanding pioneer voyages for any comparatively small motor boat. Actor John Barrymore is also known to have owned a Red Wing Thorobred. Records indicate that most of these engines were picked up by horse and wagon. Because of excessive moisture in the fields, the single bull wheel on the binder would slip, so the chain was removed and a motor was added to enable the binder to function properly as it was pulled by the team of horses. The spark plug coil measures 6 long from end to end with 7/8 pipe thread. The inside label on the lid is marked Type D Plug Coil, Conn. Last patent date Aug. 27 12, Meriden, Conn. On the outside brass lid ithas Connecticut Plug Coil Mfgd by Conn Tel. Patent dates are Aug 30 1904 and May 17 1910. The spark plug is slightly used and in very good condition. This is a older vintage Wilcox & Crittenden throttle/spark control levers… It has 2 levers… Each lever has a spring pin point latch to keep it where it is set……. The base is marked for Wilcox And Crittenden… The base and the main section of control have gear notches so the main control can be angled at different positions….. One lever has a threaded connector and the other lever does not have a connector Please See Photos…. The control moves well… It looks and displays well…. This a rare “Model D” 3hp single cylinder vertical hit and miss marine motor made by W & K Motor Co of Walkerville, Ontario, Canada. Dated 1913 with all original parts in original configuration. (except for the coil). Mixer (a company rich in marine power history), J. Morrison (Toronto) oiler, Pat’d 1905 grease cups. Brass stopcocks, drains, cups, adjustments etc all move as they should. Shaft coupler is complete. Nothing broken, cracked or damaged; has excellent compression. It is truly an outstanding find. This motor was in long term dry storage at a marina.. I can however answer all your questions and check / photograph / and further describe any specific facets of the motor. Otherwise I will gladly work with any shipper and all circumstances. This is a really nice old 8hp marine type gas engine built by the straubel machine company in green bay wisconsin. This was a very short lived company that didn’t build very many engines. This is a fresh water engine and is in excellent condition as can be seen in the photos. It is much larger than most of the marine engines that turn up as it is 8hp. It stands about 37 inches tall on the nice fabricated presentation base that it sits on. It could easily be used for stationary purposes like this. Everything seems to be correct and original on this engine. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs that i can see or know of. It turns over nicely and has excellent compression even after sitting for several years. The only thing i can see that is missing is the tab for the timer to rub on the hub of the flywheel for ignition. This would be very easy to fabricate. This engine is a two cycle engine and will run in either direction. The flywheel measures about 21 1/2 inches in diameter with a 4 1/2 inch face. The are two notches in the edge of it to start it with a bar in either direction. It has a very heavy and ornate original brass serial tag on it. This is a rather rare engine as straubels don’t turn up very often in the wild or even at swap meets so if you’re looking for something different this is certainly it. I can deliver this for free to lesueur, mn, baraboo, wi, portland, in, or coolspring, pa, later this year. It can also be picked up here.
