Hard to find large size Detroit Lubricator Co steam Hit Miss brass oiler with 2 glass sight tubes. All valves open and close well and the all brass construction is in good condition, as well as glass. Overall length is 13.5″ and the main cylinder is 5″ long by 2.25 diameter. This is a real nice original 4-feed mechanical oiler or lubricator for an early gas engine, tractor, or other piece of machinery. These had many applications in the early industrial world. It is ratchet drive from one end as can be seen. It was made by Detroit Lubricator Company has a cast iron body. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind except for the top glass. It is fresh from an old farm shop where it sat on the shelf for several decades! It is stuck but I’m sure it is just dried up and needs to be take apart and cleaned. These Detroits are much easier to work on than the Madison Kipps! It has the original filler plug and flat sight window and mounts on a 4 3/8 x 5 5/8 inch pattern. The case measures about 5 x 8 inches and is about 7 inches tall overall. Overall it is about 10 inches long. It has the original serial tag on the front. These Detroit oilers are extremely difficult to find in the wild or even at swap meets so if you’ve been looking for one don’t miss your chance on this one. It will likely be a long time before another one turns up and it probably won’t be this nice. With just a few winter hours in the woodstove-heated workshop I’d be willing to bet this would be a really nice, working oiler. I can be reached at 262 573 1931 if you’d like to talk about it. More Photos Are Below This Description. A few more to be added before noon Sunday (closing day). This is a 2 or perhaps 2.5hp, 2 cycle Detroit Engine Works vertical hit and miss engine, circa 1913. There are no breaks, cracks, or other obvious damage to the engine or flywheels. There are some slight abrasions on the outer edge of the pulley that is attached to the one flywheel, (the pulley appears to be brass under the paint, btw) It has strong compression upon spinning the flywheel; note that the cylinder has been painted and I believe the prior owner may have refurbished the top end as a start to an unfinished restoration. I believe the air intake valve on the back of the engine is installed upside down, on purpose, as all the air is being drawn through the mixer to pull the fuel into the cylinder – as on the original injection system (no longer installed on this engine) used crank case pressure and vacuum to suck the fuel from the fuel tank then pressurise the mixer nozzle which injected fuel as the intake port is uncovered by the piston on the way down. The engine would have originally had a dual feed oiler (one can install two single feed oilers in lieu of a double) Oil is not mixed with the fuel in these engines as the oiler feeds directly into the intake port. The other oiler feed goes to the bottom end of the connecting rod. Nonetheless it is an uncommon item, these 2 stroke verticals run like a top at low RPM. The grease cups are marked THE LUNKENHEIMER CO. The mixer is marked made by KOBAN marine? , which appears to have a threaded speed control dial. It weighs 158 lbs, stands 28″ tall, 21″ wide from the outer side of the flywheel pulley to the outside of the opposite flywheel, the wood base runners are 38 long. 4 Highland Rd Suite A. I have no idea if it is complete or not, as I’m not real familiar with hit and miss engines. The crank does have some pitting, and the outer cylinder jug has a partially repaired crack. The crack does not go into the piston cylinder wall. This belonged to my dad, who passed away four years ago and now it is time for it to got to a new home. It is marked in very small lettering [DETROIT LUBRICATOR CO] and is stamped [1/2 GALLON 916653]. Both sight glasses are intact and without any chips or cracks. All three knobs are in place. The two knobs on the upper half are in great condition and the lower knob has a few nicks/scratches. This oiler has the normal scratches to its body, but it is free of dents. Overall it is in remarkably good shape and appears to be in usable condition. [I would love to see the BEAST this thing would go on]. Almost all of my items are used, vintage, and/or antique. This engine is in nice shape, and starts right up and runs strong. It is mounted on the original skids. It has a very well built cooling tank with gas tank underneath, if you had to build that cooling tank it would cost you quite a lot. Whoever built the gas tank and cooling tank was very skilled. This engine has no cracks, breaks or welds. The checkvalve has a small bit of solder on it, but that is only the checkvalve, and can be replaced, even though it works fine, i personally would leave it alone. Water jacket is perfect, no cracks or issues at all, which is very rare for these engines. Engine starts very easily. It has the correct belt pulley. Carburetor and air valve are both is excellent condition. Flywheels run true, with no issues. Compression is pretty good. Advance/retard lever works great, and you can idle this engine right down where to probably 100 rpm! You hardly ever see these engines for sale, and almost never see them running at shows. This one is show ready, add gas, oil, water for the tank, and hit the road!!! I can deliver this engine for $40 to portland, in or coolspring, pa shows and swap events this year. I can also deliver for $75, anywhere in ohio, kentucky, or tennessee sometime within the next two months. You can also pick it up here free, we are 100 miles north of detroit. I can store the engine under cover for 6 months, for no charge until you come get it. Feel free to ask questions.
