John Deere Hit and Miss Engine Fairbanks Morse Model E

I bought this engine professionally restored from Jim White. He has written a book on these engines and is known expert on restoration of these engines. I bought to go with a John Deere model L tractor that I own. This engine has been in storage for over a year. When i pulled it out, it leaked gasoline from the pan. The gasket is leaking. The gasket should be a very simple fix. It is 100% complete and has the magneto that is working. I don’t know why it didn’t start, it ran perfectly when it was last used. I just don’t want to deal with it anymore and don’t want it to sit and do nothing and deteriorate. Here is a an original igniter that I think is for a Fairbanks Morse N or Standard. It looks to be in excellent condition. There is no wear that can be felt. Please take a look at the pictures and see if you need it. No cracks, breaks, or welds, that I can see or know of. Mounts to the engine with two holes 2-7/8 apart on center. I try to list items very accurately but my opinions on condition may differ from yours. Most items will go out faster though. I have many good parts and pieces I will be listing in the next few months. I try to do a very good job of listing everything I sell in a very accurate manner to explain all the good and bad points with the pictures and in the description. So if someone doesn’t pay I will ban them from my listings and also tell all my friends who also sell engine parts on here who to watch out for. If you haven’t caught on this is supposed to be mildly funny but yet serious at the same time. If you decide you don’t want it or find another one cheaper you I won’t take it back. Here is a very nice 16 bolt on clutch pulley for a 6hp Fairbanks Morse 6hp Z. This clutch is in good shape and ready to use. There is a weld on the handle that would be very difficult to notice with some fresh paint. There is a very small and tight crack in one part of the frame work for the pulley that shouldn’t hurt anything and wouldn’t need to be repaired in my opinion. Take a look at the pictures and decide if you need it. Fits a 6hp Fairbanks Morse Z. 16″ diameter, 6-1/8 ” wide belt surface. One weld and a small crack. Bolts onto the flywheel with 3 bolts. The mounting bolts are about 7-5/16 apart on center from each other. It slips over approximately a 2-1/4″ crankshaft, the hole in the pulley is about 2-5/16″. If your crankshaft would happen to be larger the pulley would need bored out. I think this will also fit a 3hp FM Z but you would need a bushing for the crankshaft. It has been completely taken apart, bead blasted inside and out, polished, bearing checked and replaced as necessary, packed, new seal, rear bushing, coil, condenser, points, and gasket installed. It was checked and cleared coated. This will fit Fairbanks Morse Z & D gas engines that are spark plug fired from 1 1/2- 20 HP. It will fit anywhere a type R or RV-1 is used. We have an antique franklin morse z 3 hp hit miss engine. The engine has been backed into with a car the housing of the fan is bent, the gear needs to be re welded as it was broken from the accident. I sent the mag out for repair and was told it wasn’t the mag. I sent the igniter out for repair. The mag and igniter was supposed to be timed…… This didn’t happen. The motor runs reliably. The motor has the original magneto for spark and starts fairly easily as the left flywheel has an integral folding starting handle. Oiler and bearing cups are also in good working order. It employs an atmospheric intake valve with a push rod operated exhaust. It comes with the wooden frame it sits on. There is modern coolant in the water reservoir as a corrosion preventative measure. I believe this model may be from circa 1923. If there are those out there who know more about it than I do, I welcome a more precise dating of its year of manufacture. I usually start it by simply putting some fuel in the priming chamber of the carb and run it for a few minutes. I used this as a basic demonstrator of internal combustion principles for an industrial arts class. It has seen little time (less than or equal to one hour run time) while in my care. The exhaust was made from modern pipe materials and uses 1 NPT. It can be adapted for a workshop or display where the exhaust may be routed outside of a structure. If you have a belt pulley it could easily be used to run period pumps, saws, air compressors, etc. If you are restoring a larger Fairbanks Morse this would make a good starter motor. This motor is no where near “light” and is at least a two man job to safely move. It is located in Southern California. After a recent query about the motor serial number I did a web search and according to the website “Oldengine. Org” the serial number puts the year of manufacture at 1931.
