Original John Lauson 4hp Frost King Hit Miss Engine

This is a 4hp John Lauson Frost King Hit Miss Engine. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll keep the description short. I disassembled this engine for inspection and gave it a good cleaning, I’ve ran it for a few hours and tinkered with the springs to get it running slow and steady. It may run slower, but it seems to be happy right where it is. I’ve only found one superficial repair on the ignitor base, beyond that there are no welds, cracks, leaks, or hidden damage. The Sumter magneto works great, around 10 volts at low speeds, I rebuilt the ignitor with new mica, new springs, and a new pin. I have to guess the engine is about 1914 or 1915 or so… If someone can pinpoint the age please let me know. There’s nothing to hide on this engine, the video and pictures speak for themselves. I don’t like to use the term “rare” very often but this is a rare original sales catalog from John Deere titled “John Deere Quality Farm Equipment and How to Use It” It is likely from 1923/4 and is a full line catalog presenting in great detal all of the products they offered at the time. It measures about 9 x 12 inches and is 160 pages long. It is Series D13 and content includes the 15-27 tractor, their Model E engines, pump jacks, corn shellers, plows, potato machinery, wagons, planters, manure spreaders, listers, hay machinery, harrows, grape and berry hoe, elevators, drills, disk tiller, cultivators, corn picker, combines, cement mixer, seeders, binders, and the beet lifters. The list just goes on! It has photos of all of John Deere’s various production facilities around the country at the time. It is in good condition for it’s age with minor wear, staining and soiling and a few slight tears but nothing that takes away from the information it contains. The last 50 pages have come loose from the binding in various sized groups but they are all there and in good shape. It is HEAVILY illustrated with great detailed photos and would be a great reference piece for the John Deere or early machinery collector. It is a wealth of information and it would be a fine addition to your reference library. The pictures tell the story. The son of the original owner knew little about the engine, other than to say that it came from a cattle operation the family once owned in Capay, California. Other than hosing off bird droppings and mud-dauber wasp nests, using a degreasing agent, I have not altered the engine from the condition in which I received it. I did liberally spray WD-40 into the crank case to drive out moisture that I feared might be there after cleaning off the exterior. Not in running condition. I think it is pretty complete, but not knowing much about these engines, I must sell AS IS. Please view photos carefully. Contact me with questions and I’ll answer as best I can. The piston and gearing all moves easily. The push rod and valves all seem to work properly as far as I can tell. The flywheel rotates fully, and meets resistance from compression as it turns’round. I do not see any cracks in the cast iron, though I must admit I have not cleaned all the years’ accumulation of muck off the engine. I believe the most likely place for cracks is the water hopper, and it shows no cracks or repairs. The size of the pallet is 40″ x 32″, and the palletized engine stands 26 high. This was one of my brother’s engines that I acquired upon his death. My brother used this to ride around at antique farm shows and parades years ago. I don’t know a lot about it so if you have any questions I will answer them to the best of my abilities. The flywheel turns freely, There are no visible cracks in the cast. This is a VERY hard to find original box for a John Deere tractor loader. It is in excellent condition and has been on a shelf in a closet or in a garage unused since the toy was taken out of it when it was new. This was likely in the 1960′s or 1970′s. It has great color and only minor soiling and discoloration commonly found on boxes like this that are over 40 years old! Nice original boxes like this don’t turn up very often and they’re so much harder to find than the toys themselves so don’t miss it! The pictures tell the story. It will be a long time before another one turns up! You won’t be disappointed in any way.
