A real head turner! Rarely seen 2 HP model. Got this beautiful engine with hopes of showing it off, but my work schedule just doesn’t allow it. My friend and I had it running for 230-60 seconds at a time, but the timing, fuel and air need to be adjusted by someone who knows abut these engines. Hopefully someone can get it running smoothly and show it off as I intended to. This engine will only increase in value. This is a 4hp John Lauson Frost King Hit Miss Engine. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll keep the description short. I disassembled this engine for inspection and gave it a good cleaning, I’ve ran it for a few hours and tinkered with the springs to get it running slow and steady. It may run slower, but it seems to be happy right where it is. I’ve only found one superficial repair on the ignitor base, beyond that there are no welds, cracks, leaks, or hidden damage. The Sumter magneto works great, around 10 volts at low speeds, I rebuilt the ignitor with new mica, new springs, and a new pin. I have to guess the engine is about 1914 or 1915 or so… If someone can pinpoint the age please let me know. There’s nothing to hide on this engine, the video and pictures speak for themselves. This is a Nice Original Sumpter Magneto Mount & the Proper Gear to run it, For An early Lauson Frost King Jr. OR DeLavel Hit & Miss Gas Engine. The mag sits in front of the flywheel, Igniter Side, & runs off the top of the cam gear, A very hard to find Bracket!!! It Also Has the original Gear To Run the Sumpter mag!! …………. This came from A Magneto shop A few Years Back & was Labeled & the gear was wired to it, I have had A couple of these engines & THIS IS The Proper set up, Now all You Need is the mag! These Are Extremely Hard parts to find, Most All Original Brackets Are Broken Repaired OR Missing, These don’t show up for sale often so don’t miss out on this one!! This is a really nice original “Baby Lauson” hit and miss gas engine. It was built by the John Lauson Manufacturing Company in New Holstein, Wisconsin. It is the smallest of the engines that they built and an extremely hard to find size. It is the earlier version of their engines being spark plug fired and a “heavy pattern” design. It is in great original condition as can be seen. It has lots of original paint and pinstriping on it yet. It does have a few flaws like the brazed head (which looks worse than it probably actually). The fuel mixer is not original but a retrofit early Associated mixer which does the job. There is an authentic reproduction cast iron muffler that needs to be machined that goes along with the sale. This engine is the 1 horsepower size but is a little later after the company rerated them to 1 1/2hp. It has very heavy flywheels on it and has good compression. It has some general overall wear consistent with an engine of this vintage but nothing real excessive. I’ve never run the engine but a previous owner showed it some 20 years ago. It shouldn’t take much to make noise with it again. It will most likely be an upgrade for your engine and it would be a fine addition to any collection of nice original engines! Remember, they’re only original once! It’s been several years since a Baby Lauson was for sale and it wasn’t a nice original like this one so don’t miss your chance.
