Nice small Lauson water cooled engine. Very similar to water cooled Briggs. Very hard to find. I haven’t had running, It does have compression and spark. The aluminum recoil start pulley has a piece broke out of it. Flywheel has a slight wobble. Has “Lauson” cast into the base. This is a very hard to find original Sumter B rotary low tension magneto for a hit and miss or throttle governed gas engine. These were used on several high quality engines in the day including Lauson, Alpha DeLaval, IHC, Fairbanks Morse, Otto, Foos, and several others. They were one of the best magnetos built at that time. It is in as found condition and someone has worked on it (or at least had it apart) in the recent past. Most of the fasteners are loose (able to turn). I had it mostly apart and it has some scale on the field pieces which should be easy to clean. It turns over nicely with very minimal rubbing… This would be eliminated with just a bit of cleaning. The bearings have very little wear. The armature looks good. It has some fasteners that have been broken off by a previous owner and could be extracted if you so choose. It mounts on a 2 inch square bolt pattern and the threads look to be usable. This magneto puts out a decent spark but would put out a perfect spark with just a little cleaning and elbow grease. It’s not perfect but it’s a very good start and could be close to perfect with just a little elbow grease! There is a slight chip on the porcelain leadout that doesn’t affect anything and is only cosmetic. These Sumter B’s are incredibly tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets so if you’ve been looking for one don’t miss your chance on this one. It will likely be a long time before another one turns up. It would also make a great spare on the shelf. Let the pictures be your guide. You’ll like it. Here’s a very hard to find original truck for a 6hp John Lauson or Alpha DeLaval hit and miss or throttle governed gas engine. It was cut apart to lengthen to haul aluminum irrigation pipe after the engine was gone. It seems to have very little wear on the wheels or axles. The wheels are 24 and 34 inches in diameter with 3 1/2 inch faces. All of the original cast iron hub caps and retaining pins are there. The 5 inch channel irons are 72 inches long and could either be welded back together or replaced easily enough. The rear axle seems to be in good shape but the front axle will need some attention including a few castings. This will be a really nice truck with some effort and would look good under most any 5-8hp engine depending on physical size. They are extremely tough to find so don’t miss your chance on it. Lauson- Lawton 8 Hp antique engine #5337 A nice original Lawson Lawton sideshaft engine with rare cam operated ignitor. Lots of original paint and decals. No cracks, breaks or welds on main parts. Mixer has braze repair on needle valve. Part of the brass lever on ignitor broke off but does not effect operation. Barn fresh patina, engine was last ran about 4 years ago. Good compression and ran slow and quiet with a battery and coil, never tried magneto. Non original Bettendorf cart heavy duty with foot break. 42″ flywheels 3″ face. Approximately 7″ bore-10″ stroke. Has a Lauson engine VA either 819 or 619- the tag is dented. I was told by the former owner that it has a stuck exhaust valve. It’s in the closed position and the rocker arm is backed off. It does have some compression the way it is. I don’t know if the mag has spark. It has the original crank handle for starting, the governor and throttle seem to move ok. This would probably be a nice piece all restored. It has a lot of its original paint under the grease. The cart is homemade and probably needs a little oil on the wheels to make it turn easier. This came from a business that used it to pump water. It did not come from a scrap yard. I don’t see any cracks on the pump housing. Not running, so I don;t know the condition of the pump. A real head turner! Rarely seen 2 HP model. Got this beautiful engine with hopes of showing it off, but my work schedule just doesn’t allow it. My friend and I had it running for 230-60 seconds at a time, but the timing, fuel and air need to be adjusted by someone who knows abut these engines. This is a 4hp John Lauson Frost King Hit Miss Engine. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll keep the description short. I disassembled this engine for inspection and gave it a good cleaning, I’ve ran it for a few hours and tinkered with the springs to get it running slow and steady. It may run slower, but it seems to be happy right where it is. I’ve only found one superficial repair on the ignitor base, beyond that there are no welds, cracks, leaks, or hidden damage. The Sumter magneto works great, around 10 volts at low speeds, I rebuilt the ignitor with new mica, new springs, and a new pin. I have to guess the engine is about 1914 or 1915 or so… If someone can pinpoint the age please let me know. There’s nothing to hide on this engine, the video and pictures speak for themselves. The mag sits in front of the flywheel, Igniter Side, & runs off the top of the cam gear, A very hard to find Bracket!!! It Also Has the original Gear To Run the Sumpter mag!! …………. This came from A Magneto shop A few Years Back & was Labeled & the gear was wired to it, I have had A couple of these engines & THIS IS The Proper set up, Now all You Need is the mag!
