A hit-and-miss engine is a type of four-stroke internal combustion engine that is controlled by a governor to operate at a set speed. It was conceived in the late 19th century and produced by various companies from the 1890s through approximately the 1940s. The name comes from the speed control on these engines: they fire (“hit”) only when operating at or below a set speed, and cycle without firing (“miss”) when they exceed their set speed. This is as compared to the “throttle governed” method of speed control. Fill the fuel tank with gasoline (95#). When the filling is completed, make sure there’s no air in the oil pipe. Its role can make the mixed gasoline fully enter the cylinder. Turn on the power switch and turn the flywheel to start the engine counterclockwise on the right side of the engine (installing the flying hammer position). If the ignition device is normal and the cylinder is under normal compression, if the machine still does not start normally, it’s very likely that the carburetor needle should be adjusted. Screw the screw on the top of the carburetor, then loosen 1/4 turn, start the flywheel. This can be done several times to make the mixing ratio of gasonline and air reach the normal working mix ratio. This is a real nice old Edwards #5 alligator metal shear. It is fresh from an old collectors estate and is in excellent condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind that I can see or know of. Everything moves and interacts as it should. There are a couple nicks on the shear bars but it should work the way it is or these could easily be replaced. These shears are a great addition to your blacksmith shop setup or display and they really speed up material gathering in working shops! I can deliver them for free (or a cold beverage) to Coolspring, PA, Baraboo, WI, or Portland, IN, engine shows later this year. They can also be picked up here. The pictures tell the story. THIS DIE-CUT SIGN ADVERTISES FOR 2.3 HORSEPOWER ENGINES AND 5 HORSEPOWER ENGINES. YOU COULD USE THE BELTS ON THIS ENGINE TO DO MANY TASKS ON THE FARM SUCH AS WASH CLOTHES, SHUCK CORN, PUMP OUT A WELL ETC. THESE GRAPHICS ARE RARE AND SELDOM SEEN AND ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE ALONG WITH THE VERY HEAVY OVER 7 OUNCES OF DIE-CUT PORCELAIN AND YOU HAVE A GREAT PIECE OF ADVERTISING. THIS IS A HARD TO FIND SIGN IN THIS CONDITION AND DOES SHOW LIGHT WEAR AND USE BUT HAS AMAZING COLOR AND GLOSS. THIS SIGN HAS 2 HOLES FOR HANGING AND IS MADE OF HEAVY DIE-CUT PORCELAIN. THIS IS A VERY HARD TO FIND SIGN IN THE THICK HEAVY PORCELAIN VERSION THAT DIE-CUT AND WEIGHTS 7 OUNCES.. NOT CHEAP TIN OR THIN METAL. Please do your own research as vintage does not necessarily mean original. Note: I was left with a large advertising collection along with some that I have collected over the years & I also attend high end estate sales in the area.
