This 4 HP Hit n Miss Engine Starts and runs very well and has good compression. It is dry underneath with no leaks. The Belt Pulley is 16 as shown in the pictures. We believe the cart is original. Also, we believe the manufactured year to be sometime around 1909 or later due to the paint color. However, if anyone knows for sure please let us know; The Serial Number is # CL31839.. Nicely made reproduction NEW unused igniter for make and break engine. Goes into a 1 1/2″ hole and held with 2 bolts on 2 1/2″ centers. Thanks to a fellow ebayer, this is believed to be for a Root & VanDervoort engine of their triumph line. Root & VanDerVoort manufactured for John Deere Plow Co. This is a very nice engine that I have run at manylocal shows under a light load. It has very impressive compression, starts veryeasy and runs very smoothly. It features an uncommon big heavy 10 pulley, crankshaft guard, good looking and hot coil, an intact fuel filter and flywheelkey head protector. Many of those are lacking on common R&Vs. Root & Vandervoort 1 HP Hit and Miss Engine – Rare engine in the small 1 HP with skeleton base. I believe it was made in the early teens – AR Model – Over a 100 years old. It will need new babbit bearings all around. The crank has pitting on it (should be able to be filled with JB weld or similar) and the flywheels will bounce back on the compression so it is decent. I believe it will also need other various work to make this engine in good running condition, possibly rings or valve work or bushings. It is going to need some work. I think in the right hands this could end up being a very nice collector piece. Seems to be all complete except for the exhaust pipe. I think it might need some new springs on the latch out, they do not seem right but I could be wrong. Oiler is NOT INCLUDED , It is on a temporary cart, NOT INCLUDED. Good Fuel tank and Pulley. Root & Vandervoort 1 HP Hit and Miss Engine – This is a rather desirable, rare engine in the small 1 HP with skeleton base. Not positive on the year it was made. I believe it was the early teens, and Not positive what model it is, possibly AR. If you have any information that you would like to share send me a message. I have only just looked over the engine for a few minutes, I will tell you what I know. After looking it over it has a somewhat fresh coat of paint on it(last few years). It seemed timed well enough and in order enough to give it a test start. It did start right up and seemed like it would run, but I only ran it for a few moments. It seems like it wasnt latching out properly. It needs some adjustments and It will need new babbit bearings all around, as there is no shims left. The crank has a good amount of pitting on it and it has ok to medium low compression, enough to run. I believe it will also need other various work to make this engine in good running condition, possibly rings or valve work or bushings. It is going to need some work. I think in the right hands this could end up being a very nice collector piece. Seems to be all complete except for the exhaust pipe. I think it will need some new springs they do not seem right. Has a Good Oiler, Good Fuel tank and Pulley. No Cracks or Breaks or Welds that I can see anywhere! This model has flywheels & gas tank that hang below the base.
