This is a well built Vaughn hit miss side shaft engine with a 9 inch flywheel. I bought it as a mechanics kit, built it, fine tuned it, pulled it apart and painted it then re assembled it back in 2005. Has under 6hrs run time on it. This is a SUPER original steam powered water pump. It was made by the Bishop and Babcock Company in Cleveland, Ohio. It is solid brass or bronze construction and is in excellent original condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs that I can see or know of except two ears of the cast iron wall mounting bracket that I have pointed out in a picture. It has most of its original paint and stenciling on it yet as can be seen! It measures about 14 inches tall and 23 1/2 inches long. It has patent dates on it from the mid 1890′s and is a “#2″ as noted on the pressure dome. Working condition is unknown as I’ve never had it apart but it looks to have had great care in the past! It would be a fine addition to your early steam pump collection or display. I would guess it would be tough to find a nicer original one than this one! These engines were used to pump water from shallow wells, to storage tanks for home, farm or business. This engine was found in a Michigan barn in 1967 or 68 by another collector (who I got it from), and he NEVER ran it once, so theres a good chance this engine hadn’t run since the 1950′s. All I have done is trip the old paint job off, and run some new gas lines, and clean out the fuel pump. There are two welds on the engine, one is on the pump itself, and one is on the water jacket of the engine (see pictures). The only other minor issue, is a small chip out of the muffler, which isn’t original, but works fine. Engine has good compression, and everything works as it should. I have never attempted to pump water with it, but I’m sure it doesn’t need much if anything to start pumping water. These Kewanee engines are few and far between, and they are quite early I would guess just before 1910. Lots of monkey motion on this engine, that is really nice to watch! There is no gear growling on any of the gears, or bad noises of any kind, with the exception of a little wrist pin clunk which most engines have. Has the original cast brass nameplate which a lot of these engines are missing. This engine needs nothing but a new home, and some shows to display it at. A very good looking pump jack that has most of its original paint! It moves up and down good. Just needs cleaned out and some oil added! It is a beast (143 lbs) without packing! Engine is mounted on a nice varnished base and overall dimensions are 15″ long by 5 1/2″ wide and 9 tall to the top of the flywheels. Has good compression and no binding as it turns over. It has not been test run and requires an external buzz coil. Displays well and would look good on the desk or to run. This is a really nice old 8hp marine type gas engine built by the straubel machine company in green bay wisconsin. This was a very short lived company that didn’t build very many engines. This is a fresh water engine and is in excellent condition as can be seen in the photos. It is much larger than most of the marine engines that turn up as it is 8hp. It stands about 37 inches tall on the nice fabricated presentation base that it sits on. It could easily be used for stationary purposes like this. Everything seems to be correct and original on this engine. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs that i can see or know of. It turns over nicely and has excellent compression even after sitting for several years. The only thing i can see that is missing is the tab for the timer to rub on the hub of the flywheel for ignition. This would be very easy to fabricate. This engine is a two cycle engine and will run in either direction. The flywheel measures about 21 1/2 inches in diameter with a 4 1/2 inch face. The are two notches in the edge of it to start it with a bar in either direction. It has a very heavy and ornate original brass serial tag on it. This is a rather rare engine as straubels don’t turn up very often in the wild or even at swap meets so if you’re looking for something different this is certainly it.
