Waters Boston Vertical 2 Fly Ball Governor for Steam Engine. 2 13/16 4 hole mounting pattern. No breaks, cracks or welds that I can see. I apologize for any inconvenience. Waters patent, 1871 and 1885, steam engine flyball governor. I really think it could be, but you all know more than me on that. One heck of a nice piece for display anyway. Waters governors is decent condition don’t seem to come up for sale often. It is roughly 17″ tall, has a 1 1/4″ opening. It weighs 23 pounds. Could be cleaned up more. I took the baked on soot off of it, which was nearly 1/4 thick. It has 7798 stamped on one part and 325 stamped on a brass part. Not sure if those are serial numbers or what. Both to help protect it and to have it fit in a box better. Very cool piece for a steam engine guy. I can always take more pictures and try to answer any questions you may have. This is a very hard to find original Waters 1 1/2 inch governor. These were commonly used on steam engines as well as a few gas engines. It was made by the Waters Governor Company in Boston, Mass. And is in excellent used condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind. Everything seems to move as it should. It stands about 18 inches tall overall. It has 1 1/2 inch pipe threads which are good as they have pipe nipples in them yet. I would say that with just a little cleaning and the addition of a drive pulley of your choice it would be ready to be used on an engine or put on the shelf for a spare. These original Waters governors are extremely tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets and they usually need a complete rebuild. This one only needs some minor attention and it should be ready to go. If you’ve been looking for one to complete a project, restoration, or for a scale model don’t miss your chance on this one. This is a very hard to find original Waters 1 1/4 inch governor. These were commonly used on steam engines as well as a few gas engines. It was made by the Waters Governor Company in Boston, Mass. And is in excellent used condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind. The drive shaft with the drive pulley on it is spring loaded and has a pin to hold it in a positive position. The hole for the pin is worn a bit and the pin doesn’t stay in tightly without a holder but this could easily be remedied with a better, more square hole to collar that holds it in the positive position. It has little noticeable wear on the gears or on the shaft. Everything seems to move as it should. It stands about 24 inches tall overall. The hole pattern on the flanges is 2 5/8 inches square and the hole on each side are 1 1/4 inches in diameter. I would say that with just a little attention it would be ready to be used on an engine or put on the shelf for a spare. These original Waters governors are extremely tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets and they usually need a complete rebuild. For your consideration is this original antique Waters fly ball steam engine governor. This was obtained from a large farm estate, I have not cleaned this, its truly farm fresh. The governor is marked Waters 2 Boston. The gears seem to turn smoothly despite some grime and surface corrosion. If you need a better picture or close up of a part, please ask. It seems to be in very solid condition but will obviously need some oiling/work if you want to use this again. Not sure what is missing but what you see is included with the governor. It measures about 23.5″ from top to bottom, and the opening at the base is 2 1/4″. The three flyballs are about 3 1/4 in diameter each. If you need other measurements, please ask. A great governor to fix up and put to use again. Will sell with no reserve. This governor weighs 57 lbs on its own.
