Witte 12 hp headless hit and miss engine. It was restored in about 1968 and i have had it all apart for a through cleaning and was running before the cleaning. There are no cracks, breaks or welds on this engine and it is on the original trucks and even has beside the metal tongue the original horse drawn tongue. It has the original clutch belt pulley and those are seldom seen on these large engines The serial number is 18182 with flywheels 3×38 and still has the original crankshaft stamped with that number. It has the original kerosene heating muffler that made it run on that fuel. It is hooked up now to the small gas tank and the large tank is there but not usable. It has the Wizard R1 generator with new leathers and was tested and does work. It has all new period wire with the buzz coil and 12 volt battery. I found a 1915 Mo license plate to put on the tool box for the fun of it. I will answer any and all questions. This engine is in very good shape mechanically and hasn’t been messed with, everything is original. Compression is very strong. Wico EK magneto has a fresh charge, and it has been gone through, virtually no wear in the armature. The engine has three minor issues. The first one, is a small chip out of the intake valve guide which doesn’t hurt a thing. The second thing is that the rocker arm has been welded. The third flaw is a chip out of the piston skirt, the engine runs great and that chip wont affect the operation in the least bit. They flipped the rod and piston over so the piston still gets good oil, nothing needs to be done as far as the operation, it will run fine, indefinitely just as it is. Flywheels run perfectly true, no wobble at all. There is no gas tank, but I will include a tank to run the engine on, which you can see in the video of it running. Has the original nameplate. It is missing the muffler, but the correct muffler on this engine is just a standard pipe cap with holes drilled in it. Has a nice working ball check oiler on it. In the pictures the throttle shaft is out of the butterfly, it must of popped out when I was moving the engine around, just needs to be dropped back in and a cotter pin added on the bottom hole, I didn’t notice it came out or I would have done that before I took pictures. This is a very good running and looking engine. Has traces of original green paint on it, this is not a rusty engine in the least bit. Skids that its on are ok, but the new owner may want to make nicer ones, but they serve the purpose. No cracks or welds on head or water jacket, only weld is on the rocker arm like I mentioned. This is a very rare size Witte to find, almost more so than the 12hp and larger Witte engines. I can also deliver this engine to Portland, IN in May or August as well as Coolspring, PA show in June, or Baraboo, WI swap meet coming up soon. You can also pick the engine up here for no charge, we are 100 miles north of Detroit. 10 day listing – NO reserve!! I was asked how the wrist pin and rod journal get lubrication if they are upside down. The grease cup is still on the rod cap its just on the bottom now, works just like it did on the top to give the bearings plenty of grease. The wrist pin gets oil cause when they switched it over they drilled a tiny hole on the top just like its supposed to have. The wrist pin gets plenty of oil. Everything in the description is correct, I just wanted to explain further. One thing I did forget to mention is the carb only has one needle valve currently, the one that runs off the gas tank. The needle valve that is supposed to be for the carb bowl is missing and somebody pipe plugged it and ground it flush I guess since they weren’t using it, if you desire to run the engine off the carb bowl you will need to drill that out and use an easy out, to remove the pipe plug. Starting it on the carb bowl is not necessary, starts fine off the gas tank using the needle valve that is on it, give it a choke and away she goes. I will be listing the hit and miss engine collection that belonged to my late father. My mother has asked that I sell these for her. Please check my other auctions for the entire collection. This is a Witte 2 HP engine. It hasn’t run in years but has always been stored inside and out of the weather. What you see in the pictures is what you get. It is not stuck, and the oiler is inside the water jacket to protect it. I truly think with a little TLC this would be up and running without much difficulty. It always ran well for dad and has been in the family for years. I honestly don’t know much about these old engines other than what they are. These were a hobby of my father’s and with him some of the knowledge of them is gone. Please understand these are two hours from where I live at the farm so answering specific questions will be difficult but I will try and get mom to check into something if you need something answered. Please understand I don’t know a lot about these engines and I have tried to be as honest as I can to their condition etc. If you come to pick it up and it’s not what I said it was then I’ll gladly just relist the engine. Fresh out of a local homestead is this 5 hp HIT & MISS WITTE saw mill. Here is the story on this unit. The original owner who passed away about a year ago used this mill until then to cut his logs for his wood stove. It has been stored in the barn ever since. The daughter swears this is a working motor as she used to help her dad cut the wood. The engine is well greased and has good compression. Has a wico mag and a coil. There are a few rolls of leather belts. I have never started it, but I welcome anybody that is in driving distance to come down and start it if they want to. I will help you with loading.
