Here is a Sumter B low tension brass body magneto. It is in absolutely excellent condition in my opinion. Please take a look at the pictures and see if you need it. SPECIAL NOTE this is a low tension mag and will not fire a spark plug! It is meant to be used with an igniter. The spark on a mag like this will not jump an air gap! I tested this mag by visually assessing the spark it produced while rubbing a bare wire against the body of the mag while turning the shaft. Brass Body, Brass Base. The bearings seem perfectly nice and tight, no wear! 2 x 2 Mounting pattern, the threads look really good. Tapered shaft for gear mounting, the taper is about 15/32″ to 19/32″. I try to list items very accurately but my opinions on condition may differ from yours. This item in a complex antique electronic mechanical unit. Please don’t act like a cave man and send me emails grunting “my friend mag guy says need rebuilt you pay he bill” or “I took apart now no fire I send back”. Most items will go out faster though. I have many good parts and pieces I will be listing in the next few months. I try to do a very good job of listing everything I sell in a very accurate manner to explain all the good and bad points with the pictures and in the description. Here nice Sumter Jr. Magneto This mag is in pretty good shape. It is hot and should be ready to use. The original pot metal base has been replaced with a very nice aluminum reproduction. This is a very difficult mag to find and will fit many different applications. Brass Body, new aluminum base. Mounts with 2 holes 2 on center. 3/8 straight shaft for gear mounting. The porcelain insulator around the power connection is a little chipped, almost all of these mags are like that and it will not hurt its operation in any way. Only very minimal wear. This mag is for an igniter and will not fire a spark plug. I truly believe that it is in good working order and is ready to start and run your engine. I think I list items very accurately but my opinion on condition may differ from yours. If you want advice on how to use it please give me a call and I’ll be glad to help. Please do not tear it apart to “clean it” or “paint it” and then try to return it or get me to pay for a rebuild because it stopped working. Most items will go out faster though. This is a very hard to find original Sumter B rotary low tension magneto for a hit and miss or throttle governed gas engine. These were used on several high quality engines in the day including Lauson, Alpha DeLaval, IHC, Fairbanks Morse, Otto, Foos, and several others. They were one of the best magnetos built at that time. It is in as found condition and someone has worked on it (or at least had it apart) in the recent past. Most of the fasteners are loose (able to turn). I had it mostly apart and it has some scale on the field pieces which should be easy to clean. It turns over nicely with very minimal rubbing… This would be eliminated with just a bit of cleaning. The bearings have very little wear. The armature looks good. It has some fasteners that have been broken off by a previous owner and could be extracted if you so choose. It mounts on a 2 inch square bolt pattern and the threads look to be usable. This magneto puts out a decent spark but would put out a perfect spark with just a little cleaning and elbow grease. It’s not perfect but it’s a very good start and could be close to perfect with just a little elbow grease! There is a slight chip on the porcelain leadout that doesn’t affect anything and is only cosmetic. These Sumter B’s are incredibly tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets so if you’ve been looking for one don’t miss your chance on this one. It will likely be a long time before another one turns up. It would also make a great spare on the shelf. Let the pictures be your guide. You’ll like it. This is an extremely nice old Sumter #22 rotary magneto for a 3hp or 6hp Fairbanks Morse Z engine with the ignitor ignition. It is in excellent rebuilt condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind. The bearings have been bushed and have no play in them. It has the original base that mounts to the engine with two holes 3 13/16 inches apart on center. It turns over nicely with excellent magnetic pull as the magnets have just been recharged. It has the original nameband on it. I’ve checked this magneto and it puts out a hot fat, blue spark that will surely run your engine if it is setup properly. It would even make a great spare on the shelf! The pictures tell the story. You won’t be disappointed in any way. These bigger Sumter magnetos don’t turn up very often in the wild or even at swap meets so don’t miss your chance on it. They are MUCH harder to find than the #12 and #14! They usually require several hundred dollars worth of repair work… It’s already done. This is an original Sumter Model 12 low tension magneto for a hit and miss gas engine. It was used on Fairbanks Morse headless Z and I’m pretty sure on the plugoscillator setup on the earlier Z engines. It is in good condition for its age. It mounts with two holes 2 inches apart on center. The threads are a bit sketchy but do hold a bolt alright. Replacement bases can be had relatively inexpensively if you don’t like this one. The magnets have just been recharged. The magneto turns over fairly stiffly and I think it’s because someone rebabbitted the bearing in the back plate. I think with a little more fitting this could be a really nice magneto. This magneto puts out a HOT, fat, blue spark that will surely run your engine if it is set up properly. It even has the original leadout on it and it is in good condition. It also has the original name band on it. The threads on the drive end of the armature are in great condition. With just a little loving it would be ready to go to work on an engine or would also be a good spare on the shelf. These don’t turn up that often anymore and are usually in pretty bad shape.
