This is a rather hard to find very early style “heavy pattern” 2 1/2hp hit and miss gasoline engine made by the John Lauson Manufacturing Company in New Holstein, Wisconsin. It is one of the earliest styles as it has the cylinder and crankcase cast in one piece. It is ignitor fired and is a true hit and miss gas engine. It is in good condition for it’s age with no cracks, breaks, or repairs that I can see or know of other than the fuel saver tab needing to be straightened out. This should be a very simple project. The engine turns over nicely and has good compression even after sitting for a few years. It looks to have some original paint under the repaint. The flywheels run true and the bearings and gearing all seem to be in great shape. This engine would benefit from an unrestoration or a proper restoration but displays quite nicely as it is. The gas tank is cast into the base. It has a very nice heavy cast brass serial tag on it. This is a very early engine that doesn’t turn up very often! It has nice lines to it and would be a fine addition to your early hit and miss engine collection or display. Other than a fuel line, gas, a battery and coil this engine shouldn’t take much to make noise! The pictures tell the story. You’ll like it. I can deliver this for free to LeSueur, MN, Baraboo, WI, Portland, IN, or Coolspring, PA, engine shows or swap meets later this year. I have a forklift to load if you choose to pick it up. 1 1/2hp John Deere Hit Miss Gas Engines. Very Nice Original & Parts Engine NO RESERVE!!!! Here is a pair of 1 1/2 horse power John Deere Hit Miss Gas Engines. With an extra head assembly, plus flywheels with crank and gear. I have included many photos to show their condition. As can be seen they are both barn fresh. One has the nicest original logo that I have ever seen. I think the new owner will find loads of original paint under all of that. This engine has good compression for being old dry and untouched for many years. The mag shaft turns freely when the flywheels are turned. It has a very old repair on the ignitor. I do not see any other cracks or repairs. As can be seen the trip lever spring is missing and one of the. Flywheels has about a 1/16 of an inch runout. I don’t think it will take much to get this engine going. The rougher engine has a bit of compression for being dry and untouched. As can be seen it is missing a few parts. The ignitor is cracked. This is the only crack that I can find on the engine. The extra head has a broken and twisted ignitor. I have to many smaller engines, that I have been tripping over. Cluttering the barn that need to go. Keep checking my other auctions for no reserve barn fresh engines. Please call if you need additional information. Engine has one weld that I can find which is on the feed tube that attaches to carburetor, it looks like a old repair! Engine has one break that I can see which is on one of the governor weights, the ear is broken off that rides in the governor collar. Piston and bore looks to be in good condition and turns over freely! There’s a small hole drilled through the cam gear, i think someone had plans of installing spark plug ignition at one time. Comes with a reproduction brass rocker arm that still needs machined. Bearings still have plenty of life left in them! Engine is missing the mag, gas tank, speed lever, and misc bolts and springs I’m sure! Engine should make a great project it’s small and easy to move!! Parts for these Nelson brothers are easy to find it seems like. Still lots of grease and original paint! Please ask questions if you have any! I can bolt this to a pallet and drop off at my local Fastenal for no extra charge! My Fastenal is located in Mt Pleasant Iowa 52641. This engine was found in northern Michigan many years ago by the man I bought it from. It is mounted on a heavy set of trucks with a nice tongue. This engine is in almost new condition mechanically, the compression is incredible, with zero blow by. The engine is very easy to start even with the super compression by using the intake valve, I can show the next owner how easy this engine is to start. Both flywheels run perfectly true and have no issues. The ignition is by battery and buzz coil (and spark plug), which is a very reliable system. Has a nice working oiler. Another great thing about this engine, is that there are NO cracks, breaks or welds. It is also a rare version in the fact that it has the kerosene burning attachment, which is currently the needle valve that is being used to run the engine. The gas tank is not original but certainly serves the purpose fine. The muffler is also not a Witte muffler, it’s an Economy muffler and looks and works just as good. Has the original nameplate. Pulley is small, but I guess is better than having no pulley at all. With the condition this engine is in, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s putting out more horse power than the 12 that it’s rated. This engine is ready to hit the shows or put in a full days work. Please watch the video below and see for yourself. Very strong firing, nice coasting engine with zero bad clunks or noises. This is not a small engine! If you have been looking for a big, early hit and miss to take to the shows this would certainly fit that bill. This engine is mechanically and cosmetically in nice shape. Compression is good, and all moving parts show normal wear. The only thing this engine is missing is the nameplate, but the serial number is on the end of the crank, so a new tag could be correctly stamped very easy. Serial number is #8067. The engine is mounted on a decent set of hardwood skids, and even has a battery box, you just need to drill the holes for your wires. The engine starts and runs excellent. Hits good and strong once and coats as it should. This engine is ready to work, or just show. The engine could use a new wrist pin and bushing, as you can hear in the video there is some wrist pin clunk, just a normal thing most old engines could use. Very nice working ball check oiler. Only weld I can see on this engine is the tab on the flywheel where the governor spring bolt sets in, it’s not a weld I would worry about in the least bit. Paint may or may not be original, I will let you be the judge. Flywheels run perfectly true. Gas tank is built into the base and there are no gas leaks, or water leaks anywhere. This is a pretty nice older restoration 4 1/2hp United Type A hit and miss gas engine. It is a very early engine (serial 400124). It was restored back in the 1970′s and seems to have most of the original paint underneath. It is in excellent mechanical condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs that I can see or know of. It has good compression even after sitting for a few decades. There is very little wear on the engine as the gears are nice and square and bearings all seem to be tight. The flywheels run true. It has the correct early style head and mixer on it along with the original muffler. The gas tank is homemade and has a pinhole in it but should be an easy repair or replacement. It is on a factory subbase which is quite uncommon. It is on a large wheeled (2 1/2 inch face wheels) Electric Wheel cart which I believe is correct for it. It was also used under many other manufacturers engines. It has the original handle and rolls nicely. I haven’t run the engine but It should only take some fresh gas and a battery to make it run. I can deliver it for free to LeSueur, MN, Baraboo, WI, Portland, IN, or Coolspring, PA, next year. It can also be picked up here. The pictures tell the story. The bigger United engines don’t come along that often so don’t miss it. This is a real nice original fuel mixer or carburetor for an International Harvester 1 1/2hp Type M gas engine. It is the earliest style mixer with the two needles before they changed to the 3 needle and eventually the single needle. It is part number 9624TA and is in excellent original used condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind except for the screw for the choke plate being turned off and the top of the drain valve which is stuck. These are not used unless you run the engine on kerosene. Both needles turn freely and are the early ones with cast iron heads although one has been broken off. I believe this mixer would work as it is or with just a little effort could be made perfect! These early original mixers don’t come up for sale that often so if you need one for your engine or just for a spare on the shelf here it is. The pictures tell the story. It will likely be a long time before another one turns up and it probably won’t be this nice! You’ll like it.
