This is an original Fairbanks Morse Type R high tension magneto for an old engine. It was factory equipment on many of the Model Z engines that were spark plug fired. It has a 25 tooth gear on it for the Dishpan Z engines that could easily be changed if needed. The bearings have almost no noticeable wear and it turns over very smoothly with good magnetic pull. It is in great shape with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind that I can see or know of except for a chip on the leadout tower which won’t affect anything. It puts out a good, hot, blue spark that will surely run an engine if it is set up properly. It mounts with two holes 3 7/8 inches apart on center. These original Fairbanks Morse R magnetos are getting tougher to find every day so if you’ve been looking for one don’t miss your chance on this one. It would also make a great spare on the shelf. Real nice original 1 1/2hp Fairbanks Morse Dishpan Z. This is the red hit and miss version which is quite scarce. On original skids with original battery box and gas tank. Everything moves as it should and engine has very good compression. Lots of original paint and more under the grease and oil! Nice buzz coil in the correct coil box. The hasp on the box is missing but doesn’t affect anything. Previous owner ran the engine in the past few years. Included but not in the pictures is the correct starting crank. Not many survivors like this left to be found! I can deliver for free (or a cold beverage) to Coolspring, PA, later this month or LeSueur, MN, Baraboo, WI, or Portland, IN, next year. Original 2hp Fairbanks Morse Dishpan Z. This is a throttle governed engine. It still has some decent original paint on it. It has the original and larger than normal pulley on it. It turns over nicely with some compression even after sitting for many years. It is on the original skid/frame. It has a broken governor bracket, cracked head, and an old repair on the rocker arm. It will also need a gas tank. It should be a pretty straightforward restoration. This is a pretty nice original crank guard or splash shield for an old Fairbanks Morse gas engine. I believe it is for the 1 1/2hp Z and also the Dishpan Z engines. It is in excellent original condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind. It mounts with two ears about 7 1/2 inches apart on center but this is a bit arbitrary as the ears can move in or out to accommodate the engine’s bolt pattern. It has some mild pitting which won’t affect anything. These original crankguards are rather tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets and many of them are missing. If you’ve been looking for one to complete a restoration here’s your chance. This one is ready to be put to work on an engine or put into your inventory for a spare. The pictures tell the story. The motor runs reliably. The motor has the original magneto for spark and starts fairly easily as the left flywheel has an integral folding starting handle. Oiler and bearing cups are also in good working order. It employs an atmospheric intake valve with a push rod operated exhaust. It comes with the wooden frame it sits on. There is modern coolant in the water reservoir as a corrosion preventative measure. I believe this model may be from circa 1923. If there are those out there who know more about it than I do, I welcome a more precise dating of its year of manufacture. I usually start it by simply putting some fuel in the priming chamber of the carb and run it for a few minutes. I used this as a basic demonstrator of internal combustion principles for an industrial arts class. It has seen little time (less than or equal to one hour run time) while in my care. The exhaust was made from modern pipe materials and uses 1 NPT. It can be adapted for a workshop or display where the exhaust may be routed outside of a structure. If you have a belt pulley it could easily be used to run period pumps, saws, air compressors, etc. If you are restoring a larger Fairbanks Morse this would make a good starter motor. This motor is no where near “light” and is at least a two man job to safely move. It is located in Southern California. After a recent query about the motor serial number I did a web search and according to the website “Oldengine. Org” the serial number puts the year of manufacture at 1931. It is mounted on a homemade cart but it is a very well built one, and works great. Good gas tank, no leaks, and no water leaks either. Comes fully equipped with a battery and coil. Has the correct, good working Fairbanks oiler on it, with the female pipe threads. Original crank guard is on it and in very nice shape. The muffler is not correct but works very nice. Has the original tin battery box and original nameplate. NO welds on the engine! Knife switch on the battery box works just as it should, and so does the speed control lever for the governor. This engine is ready to work or play. This is truly ready to hit the shows tomorrow, just need gas and oil. I ran it today on a half tank of gas for almost 10 hours!! I can also store it here for up to 6 months, for no charge as long as it’s paid for. This is a real nice original 1 1/2hp fairbanks morse z gas engine. It is commonly called a dishpan z for obvious reasons. It is a throttle governed engine and is in excellent condition as can be seen. It has excellent compression and lots of original paint! It hasn’t been run in a few years but i see no obvious reason why it won’t run although i haven’t tried it. It has the original belt pulley on it and seems to have very little usage on it as the bearings and gears are all very nice yet. It would be a fine addition to your collection of original engines or a probable upgrade from the dishpan z you currently have in your collection.
