ANTIQUE PICKERING FLY BALL GOVERNOR Very nice antique 2 Pickering fly ball governor in good useable condition with no serious damage (driven pulley has two chips) and no repairs. The valve throw adjuster works, as does the valve tension device, and what looks like some sort of override also functions as it should. The horizontal shaft/bushing is showing some wear, mainly on the out board end, and no doubt in the direction of the drive belt tension (the wear is mostly horizontal). This old beauty spins easily by hand and the springs are good. Plenty of grease and grime but I do believe this one could be pressed back into service if the need is there. I personally have never seen one this complete or damage free. Half inch bolts are 2 3/4″ on center, brass valve is 2″ in diameter and the unit from top of base to top of governor is 22 1/2. For your consideration is this original antique Waters fly ball steam engine governor. This was obtained from a large farm estate, I have not cleaned this, its truly farm fresh. The governor is marked Waters 2 Boston. The gears seem to turn smoothly despite some grime and surface corrosion. If you need a better picture or close up of a part, please ask. It seems to be in very solid condition but will obviously need some oiling/work if you want to use this again. Not sure what is missing but what you see is included with the governor. It measures about 23.5″ from top to bottom, and the opening at the base is 2 1/4″. The three flyballs are about 3 1/4 in diameter each. If you need other measurements, please ask. A great governor to fix up and put to use again. Will sell with no reserve. This governor weighs 57 lbs on its own. The governor is marked Pickering Governor Co Portland, Conn on one side, and the other is marked Shaft Rev 430. The number 406775B follows. It is also marked Pat Oct 15 07. The gears seem to turn smoothly despite some grime and surface corrosion. If you need a better picture or close up of a part, please ask. It seems to be in very solid condition but will obviously need some oiling/work if you want to use this again. It measures about 20.5″ from top to bottom, and the base has about a 5.5″ diameter. The three flyballs are about 2.5 in diameter each. If you need other measurements, please ask. A great governor to fix up and put to use again. Will sell with no reserve. New Live Steam Mill Engine with Flyball Governor. Sometimes referred to as a Box Bed Engine. Up for sale is my fifth fully machined and assembled mill steam engine from castings. Included: cross slide, flywheel, eccentric, piston and rings, and all moving parts for the engine. The bore is 3 inches with a 4-inch stroke. The overall length of the engine is 36″, the width 18″ and the height 23. One of the features of this engine is a flyball governor. The flywheel is 15 dia. The complete engine weighs 150 lbs. I estimate the hp at 3-4 depending on boiler pressure. The oiler and valves are included. It runs at 375 rpm wide open. The inlet pipe is 1 1/2 in diameter. This governor is marked in raised letters “Pat June 17, 84″. It is free turning and not frozen. I have no way of testing this item. This is an antique #1 gardner flyball governor in used condition. Patent aug 14 1878 so the tag on the unit states. It was saved from being scraped when his neighbor became ill. Made of cast iron. Valve has some exposed brass. The pulley has a slight break in one side or missing a piece if you want to know. Wire integrated into frame. Good piece of americana.
